On 13th February, 1915 the 1st Leinster battalion of 82 Brigade, 27th Division, moved into the front line at Dickebusch in the Ypres salient. At 1.45pm on the following day, 14th February, their trenches were heavily shelled and after two hours were evacuated. That night, with the assistance of the 2nd Cornwall and 4th King’s Royal Rifle Corps battalions, the trenches were recaptured but not without cost, the 1st Leinster battalion suffering over seventy casualties, including Henry Vanderhook who was killed.
